Naivacha, Kenya – From January 15th to 17th, 2024, more than 100 participants from different regions of the African continent gathered in Naivacha for the 2nd General Congress of the Aquaculture Network for Africa (ANAF). This event played a significant role in promoting the sustainable development of aquaculture, focusing on crucial issues such as poverty alleviation, food security, wealth creation, job creation, and livelihood enhancement.

The central objective of this meeting was to promote a sustainable model of aquaculture development, with an emphasis on combating poverty, ensuring food security, and fostering wealth creation and job opportunities. Over the course of three days, participants exchanged ideas, engaged in debates, and developed strategies to strengthen the vital role of aquaculture in Africa’s economic and social growth.

A key highlight of the congress was the formulation of a strategic action plan aimed at effectively developing aquaculture in Africa. This plan, a result of collective thinking, represents a concrete commitment from ANAF to play a major role in promoting sustainable growth of the aquaculture sector on the continent.

The confidence placed in the outgoing board to continue governing the organization for the next two years demonstrates the recognition of the progress achieved. As a result, South Africa remains the President of ANAF, Kenya assumes the vice presidency, Cameroon holds the secretariat, Egypt is responsible for finances, and Nigeria handles communication.

The participation and involvement of the Media Observatory for Sustainable Fisheries in Africa (MOSFA) and its president highlighted the importance of communication and awareness around the challenges of aquaculture. This collaboration enhanced the visibility of the sector’s challenges and opportunities, underscoring the need for a holistic approach to foster its growth.

Furthermore, participants recommended that the next congress be held in 2025, in conjunction with the World Aquaculture Conference taking place in Africa. This recommendation demonstrates the willingness to strengthen international links and cooperation for the development of aquaculture in Africa.

This congress marked an important milestone in the promotion of sustainable aquaculture rooted in the values of solidarity, innovation, and progress for Africa.
